Does the I AM Care?

I grew up in a Coptic Orthodox family in Ethiopia. In the culture I grew up in, there is no aspect of life that is not touched by religion. So you can imagine how jarring it was for me to read Neville say things to the effect that the I am is neutral. The I am with us is a creative power that flows where we point it through the use of imagination. It is like water, it let's both the flower and the weeds grow. From a logical standpoint it made total sense to me because after all I do believe I have free will. However, it still took me a while to outgrow the idea that there is a dude up there in the sky that deeply cares about me.

Once I made peace with that, then I thought, well wait a minute...if the I am doesn't care which way I go, then where does desire come from? Isn't desire pulling me to go a certain way. And if desire comes from the I AM, how can the I AM be indifferent?

The tension is real, and it is worth sitting with honestly rather than resolving too quickly, because both sides of it are true.

The first side: the I AM is neutral creative power. It does not impose. It does not choose for anyone. It does not prefer one state over another. Whatever is assumed, it hardens into fact. Neville taught this directly. In The Power of Awareness, he wrote: "An assumption, though false, if persisted in, will harden into fact." The I AM does not check whether the assumption is good for the one who holds it before it creates. It just creates. That is the terrifying freedom at the center of this teaching. You are the operant power. No one is steering for you.

The second side: desire is not random. Desire shows what is closest to the surface, what is most ready to emerge in a specific person's configuration. And if the I AM is the source of everything, then the I AM is also the source of that desire. The desire is not noise. It is information rising from the deep, from the same I AM that contains every possibility.

Here is where the two sides meet.

The I AM is neutral in the sense that it will not override free will. It will not stop anyone from assuming a state that harms them. It will not force anyone into a state that serves them. In that sense it is completely indifferent to the choices made. That is the freedom Neville kept teaching.

But neutral does not mean empty. The I AM contains every possibility, and within that infinite field, certain things are closer to the surface for each person specifically. That is the desire, the calling, the dominant pull. Neville spoke of desire as the messenger of imagination. The messenger does not come from nowhere. It comes from the same source that holds every state. So the I AM is not indifferent the way a rock is indifferent. It is more like an ocean that has currents. The ocean does not force anyone to swim in any direction, but there are currents, and anyone who pays attention can feel which way the water is already moving for them.

Consider the person who feels a pull toward something their conditioning never taught them to want. The conditioning said get a stable career, follow the expected path, do what makes sense to the people around you. But something deeper kept pulling in another direction, something that could not be explained by environment or upbringing. That pull did not come from conditioning. It came from the deep, from the I AM showing what was closest to the surface in that specific configuration. The pull was not manufactured. It was recognized.

So does the I AM care? Not in the way most people were taught, not as a personality watching from above, judging, rewarding, punishing. But it does express itself through the specific shape of what rises in each person. The calling is not random. The dominant desire is real information about what is most ready to emerge. That is not indifference. That is intimacy without imposition.

Free will operates because the I AM will not override anyone. But the calling operates because the I AM is not silent either. It shows. The person chooses whether to follow. Both are true at once. The freedom and the invitation.

Genesis 1 lays the groundwork for this architecture in its opening verses. In verse 2, before anything has been created, the text describes the deep, the Hebrew word tehom, a vast undifferentiated expanse containing everything in potential but with nothing yet selected or formed. The deep is the I AM at rest in its own infinite possibility. Then in verse 1, the creative word acts. The Hebrew word for "created" is bara, and its meaning is not manufacturing something from nothing. It is selecting, separating, revealing what is already present within the formless whole. Creation in Genesis is not construction. It is revelation. The creative word reaches into the deep and draws out what was already there, waiting.

Desire operates the same way. It is the deep showing what is latent and ready to be drawn out. The person still has to speak the word. They still have to assume the state. But the information about which state is nearest did not come from nowhere. It came from the same I AM that is them.

That is not a god that does not care. That is a god that trusts enough to let the person choose, while quietly showing them what is already theirs.
